Andrea Cavallari was stopped around 10.00 am as he was preparing to leave a hotel in Lloret de Mar, a well-known tourist resort on the Catalan coast, where he had found accommodation under a false name and with false documents .
This was reported by investigative sources from the Barcelona police, who, together with the Carabinieri, ended the young man's two-week fugitive status. Cavallari, convicted for the Corinaldo massacre and escaped on July 3rd after being granted leave to defend his thesis , had traveled from Barcelona, where he had been reported last weekend, to Lloret de Mar. He was unarmed and had numerous counterfeit banknotes in his pocket, the provenance of which is currently being investigated .
All these elements suggest a meticulously planned escape. Investigators are investigating not only for escape but also for aiding and abetting, to determine who might have helped him escape . Cavallari had been released from Dozza prison on Thursday, July 3rd, to defend his thesis in Legal Sciences. He had been entrusted to his family and was not escorted by prison officers. After graduation, he had lunch with his family and then escaped in a friend's car.
He had crossed the border by land to avoid being stopped . After passing through Barcelona and some areas of the province, where he had left traces that were closely followed by investigators last weekend, Cavallari moved to Lloret del Mar, where he found lodging under a false name and with false documents in a hotel in the tourist resort.
This morning around 10:00 a.m., he was preparing to leave the hotel when police and Carabinieri raided the area to arrest him. Cavallari was caught checking out and, when arrested, offered no resistance , having been caught by surprise by the officers, according to investigators' reconstruction.
Barcelona police emphasized the significant collaboration with Italian law enforcement, which led to the arrest of the fugitive, thanks to the effective work of the liaison officer for cooperation between the judicial authorities of the two countries.
Andrea Cavallari will be presented tomorrow to the magistrate of the Central Judicial Office No. 3 of the National Court, who will order his pre-trial detention pending extradition proceedings to Italy.
