The explosion of a mine cut off the main power connection to one of the reactors at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia, the International Atomic Energy Agency (Aiea) said in a statement.

This is "the latest incident that underlines the fragile nuclear safety and security situation of the plant during the current military conflict", said the director general of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi .

The explosion occurred on the evening of October 30 outside the perimeter fence of the plant , disconnecting the external 750 kilovolt power line between the plant panel and the main electrical transformer of reactor unit 4.

This unit is receiving the electricity necessary for cooling and other essential safety and nuclear protection functions from a reserve line that connects the plant to the yard of the nearby thermal plant, explains Grossi referring to the information provided by the IAEA team of experts present. at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

The United Nations nuclear control body said yesterday that it had initiated inspections in Ukraine as part of an "independent verification" of Russian allegations that Kiev is producing so-called "dirty bombs". The inspectors have "started - and will soon complete - verification activities at two locations in Ukraine," the agency said in a statement.
