A teenager has died and 69 people have been injured in a magnitude 5.8 earthquake that struck 68 km deep off the coast of Marmaris, a seaside resort in southwestern Turkey, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced this morning.
“A 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital after a panic attack, but unfortunately she died despite all the necessary interventions,” said Ali Yerlikaya. Sixty-nine other people “who jumped from a height in panic” were injured in Mugla province, where Marmaris is located, the minister added, explaining that, according to initial reports, no residential buildings were destroyed.
"Our damage assessment teams are continuing their field reconnaissance operations. No damage has been observed so far," said Planning Minister Murat Kurum.
Many beach resorts, including Marmaris, Fethiye and Bodrum, are located in Mugla province , which welcomed 3.7 million foreign tourists in 2024, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.
