Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has announced his resignation from OpenAI's board of directors following the release of new emails linking him to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The emails, considered embarrassing, have raised questions about the nature of Summers's relationship with Epstein and the involvement of other individuals connected to Harvard University, where Summers was president and currently holds a professorship. Among those mentioned in the communications are Summers's wife, a professor emeritus of American literature, and nearly a dozen current or former university members. Harvard has announced the launch of an internal investigation to shed light on the relationships and the roles of those involved.
Meanwhile, The New York Times terminated the columnist contract it signed with Summers in January following the release of the emails.
The scandal marks another controversial chapter in the career of Summers, a prominent figure in the academic and financial worlds, as the institutions involved seek to clarify any liability.
