An intervention by the Hungarian government on the case of Ilaria Salis which is certainly not the first. But the "harsh and clear" words that arrived yesterday directly from Viktor Orbán's spokesperson, Zoltan Kovacs , show all the irritation in Budapest at the interest of President Sergio Mattarella and the Italian media, which every day follows the story of the left-wing militant 13 months in prison on charges of attacking three neo-fascists.

« Since mid-February , Ilaria Salis' father , Roberto Salis, has been making the rounds in the European media saying he is 'worried' about his daughter's safety while she is in Hungary », Kovacs wrote in a post on X, later clarifying that « no one, no far left group, should see Hungary as some kind of boxing ring where they can come and plan to beat someone to death . And no, no direct request from the Italian government (or any other major media outlet) to the Hungarian government will make it easier to defend Salis's case, because the government, as in any other modern democracy, has no control over the courts ».

A real cold shower for Ilaria's father, Roberto Salis, who has been fighting alongside his daughter for over a year: «It's all politicized – he comments – the trial has already been done and the verdict has been issued , it's not clear why continue with the hearings... When there is a politician who takes it out on a private citizen of another state it is clear that there is something incredible going on."

Already at the end of January, after the first hearing of the trial, Kovacs had defined the credibility of Ilaria Salis as "highly questionable" and her Hungarian lawyer, Gyorgy Magyar, as "openly left-wing" , but it was then Foreign Minister Péter Szijjartó who clarified the point of view of the Budapest government: "I sincerely hope that this lady receives the deserved punishment in Hungary", he said in Rome after a conversation with the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani which took place at the end of February.

And now this new clarification after the news, which also appeared in Hungarian newspapers, of the solidarity phone call from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to Roberto Salis.
