It's called Threads and it's Twitter's new rival. This is the social network launched by Meta, owner of Facebook. "Let's do it. Welcome to Threads,” wrote Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in his first post on the fledgling platform.

In the first four hours there were 5 million subscribers.

Visually Threads looks like the text version of Instagram but in Europe it hasn't been implemented yet.

"A space for real-time updates and public conversations" that relies on users' Instagram credentials, explains Meta. It supports text messages up to 500 characters, photos and videos up to five minutes. Threads will also support reposts - like retweets - as well as posts with mentions. Users can limit their replies, block and report other users. And Thread posts can be easily shared as Stories on Instagram. "Our plan is to work with ActivityPub to give you the ability to port your content to another service," the company wrote on the blog. "Our vision is that people using compatible apps will be able to follow and engage with people." on Threads without having a Threads account and vice versa, ushering in a new era of diverse and interconnected networks."

"It will take time, but I think it will be a public conversation app with over 1 billion people - writes Zuckerberg in a post on Threads shortly after its launch - Twitter had the opportunity to do it but it failed. We hope to do so." The app arrives in 100 countries around the world, but not in Europe, and is compatible with both Google's Android operating system and Apple's iOS.
