Former president Bouteflika died at 84
He lived in a nursing home west of Algiers
Abdelaziz Bouteflika, former president of Algeria, died at the age of 84. This was communicated by the Presidency of the Republic with a statement taken up by state television.
Bouteflika lived in a nursing home in Zeralda, west of Algiers.
In April 2019, due to strong pressure from the army and the squares, he abandoned the idea of running for the umpteenth time - the fifth -, after 20 years in power.
In 2013 he had a stroke and the last time he appeared on TV was when the "Hirak" protest movement and the military forced him to resign. Then he announced his surrender.
