After a count characterized by an initial heads-up, with the pro-European parties actually having an advantage, the result of the elections in Slovakia has arrived.

And, contrary to initial predictions, the left-wing nationalist Social Democrats of former pro-Russian prime minister Robert Fico emerged victorious.

Fico's party – Smer – received 23% of the votes, while the Progressive Slovakia formation stopped at 18%.

Voter turnout in the country was almost 67.4%, the highest since 2002.

“With us, no more weapons for Ukraine,” Fico said several times during the election campaign.
