It's official: Luigi Di Maio has been appointed the first EU special representative for the Gulf. An assignment announced by the high representative for foreign affairs of the Union, Josep Borrell, who wrote on Twitter: «Now he has an ambitious mandate to complete: to help bring the EU partnership with the Gulf countries to a new strategic level, with mutual benefit».

And the same social network was chosen by the former leader of the 5 Star Movement and former Foreign Minister to write, in English: «I am honoured. It's a big responsibility. I am ready to engage, listen and find together with EU members and each of our regional partners the best ways to strengthen our security and prosperity together."

Di Maio will take office on June 1, with an initial term of 21 months.
