British air strikes against Houthi military positions in Yemen were authorized by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to repel attacks by rebels supported by Iran on ships transiting the Red Sea. The Times writes it.
The United Kingdom is expected to join the US and other allies in carrying out the mission "shortly", specifies the newspaper. The Houthis' actions have severely disrupted international trade on what is a key route between Europe and Asia.
The Prime Minister called an emergency cabinet meeting to brief ministers on the British military commitment. The meeting followed an earlier meeting of the government's "Cobra" emergency committee and the National Security Council to discuss the crisis. Sir Keir Starmer, the Labor leader, and Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, were informed of the military intervention.
