The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, March 31, at 10:00 a.m. (4:00 p.m. Italian time), at the request of France, following the deaths of three UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon, where the Sassari Brigade is also stationed in the western sector. Diplomatic sources in New York reported this.
The risks that the international mission under the aegis of the United Nations is running due to the violent clashes between the Israeli IDF and Hezbollah militias in the war in the Middle East were the focus of a meeting last night between the Italian Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, and the French Minister of Defence, Catherine Vautrin .
In a joint statement, the two ministers expressed " deep and serious concern about the deteriorating security situation in the area , particularly the recent attacks targeting UNIFIL personnel, resulting in the deaths of three peacekeepers and wounding others." They also strongly emphasized "the unacceptability of such incidents and the growing risks to which personnel engaged in the mission are exposed. During the discussions, full convergence emerged on the strategic importance of UNIFIL . It was emphasized that Lebanon's stability is an essential pillar for the balance of the entire Mediterranean area, confirming that Italy and France will continue to work closely together to ensure the safety of international personnel, the preservation of peace, and support for the Lebanese authorities."
