Three people, belonging to the same family, died in Australia after eating some mushrooms during a lunch. And a fourth is in serious condition.

The story, which comes from Leongatha, south-east of Melbourne, focuses the attention of the police. In the crosshairs the 48-year-old who cooked, investigated for poisoning.

Gail and Don Patterson, explains the BBC, stopped for lunch with their grandchildren at the home of their daughter-in-law, Erin Patterson. With them were Heather, Gail's sister, and her husband Ian.

After a few hours, the four guests went to the hospital thinking of a serious form of gastroenteritis, but the analyzes revealed something else, and they were transferred to Melbourne. Heather, 66, Gail and Don, both 70, are dead. Ian, 68, struggles between life and death, waiting for a liver transplant.

Police think the four ate highly lethal mushrooms. Erin and her two children, on the other hand, are fine. Police said both children, who were placed in state care as a "precaution", ate different meals. Investigators say they aren't sure if Erin ate the same food as her guests. Furthermore, the woman is separated from her husband, who is the son of the Pattersons, but the investigators have described it as an "amicable" separation.
