More than two thousand people were buried by a huge landslide that came off a mountain during the night between Thursday and Friday in a mountainous and almost inaccessible area of Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby communicated this to the United Nations.

“The landslide buried more than 2,000 people alive and caused severe destruction,” the country's national disaster center said.

It is estimated that the landslide, which occurred in the province of Enga, swept away around 150 houses, divided into six villages, inhabited by at least 4 thousand people. Second

According to experts, the definitive count of victims will however be difficult to establish with certainty given the vastness of the affected area: the landslide accumulated debris up to 8 meters high in a perimeter equal to 4 football fields. But the damaged area is much larger, over 200 square kilometers.

According to some local media, the landslide may have been caused by heavy rains in recent weeks.
