The 72-year-old man admitted to San Martino Hospital in Oristano, the first confirmed case of West Nile fever in Sardinia in 2025, remains in stable condition. The man, a resident of the city with underlying health conditions, underwent serological tests after a sudden deterioration in his health. Confirmation of the infection came from the laboratory at the University Hospital of Cagliari.

Immediately following the diagnosis, the Province of Oristano activated the emergency protocol set forth in the National Plan for the Prevention of Arboviruses. At dawn today, an adulticide treatment was carried out within a 200-meter radius of the suspected infection site, including the urban park on Viale Repubblica, frequented by residents and tourists. Larval controls were also intensified throughout the area, and ten additional anti-algae treatments were scheduled, at the request of the Municipality and the Local Health Authority.

Meanwhile, Local Health Authority 5 clarifies that there are no restrictions on blood collections. Donations in the province are continuing as normal thanks to the preventive implementation of NAT (Nucleic Acid Test) tests on all donors since June. "Blood is safe; there are no risks for recipients or donors," explains Mauro Murgia, director of the Transfusion Center, who urges the public to continue this act of generosity, which is essential even in the summer.
