Severe overcrowding and boarding of patients at the emergency room of the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari. Nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers working at Is Mirrionis are "exhausted," partly due to "long wait times and the nervousness of exasperated patients, which is affecting the staff."

The healthcare professions union Nursing Up is raising the alarm. "Patients who have already been seen and are not transferred to their designated wards cannot remain in the emergency room for days. This morning, we have 21 patients boarding who need to be admitted to a ward," reports Andrea Cattarin, union leader of the Nursing Up Local Health Authority of Cagliari, who is calling for "the immediate implementation of the measures envisaged in the regional plan for managing overcrowding."

Cattarin accuses "it's humanly impossible for healthcare professionals to simultaneously manage long-term care and ensure access and management of incoming emergencies. This is the negative phenomenon of boarding, meaning patients spend days in the emergency room due to a lack of available beds in the assigned wards."

According to the union, the critical issues are evident in the emergency room, with insufficient space and unmanageable workloads. However, the root of the problems is thought to be related to the availability of beds in the wards and in the surrounding area. Marino Vargiu, regional director of Nursing, is calling on the Department of Health to intervene promptly to protect workers and the public.
