One million euros to OIS – Works and Infrastructures of Sardinia – for a feasibility study to design a new bridge over the Flumendosa River.

Overcoming the current serious traffic problems related to the Flumendosa River crossing by evaluating the construction of a new bridge, upgrading the existing one and converting it to a pedestrian/cycle path, and identifying other solutions to improve road connectivity in the area; this is the goal of an amendment to Bill No. 119 (2025-2027 Budget Adjustment) presented today in the Regional Council by Councilor Sandro Porcu, leader of the Orizzonte Comune group. The amendment received the signatures of all members of the chamber and a unanimous vote in favor.

The feasibility study must provide comprehensive and reliable information, including an in-depth technical analysis of the territorial, geological, hydraulic, and infrastructural context, an economic and financial assessment with estimated costs, timescales, and benefits, as well as a preliminary assessment of environmental and landscape sustainability and consistency with existing territorial and urban planning.

Everything will need to be done in close collaboration with local communities, who will be involved from the earliest stages through technical discussions and public discussions, so as to precisely define the local area's real needs and ensure a participatory and transparent process.

The goal is to build a work that is not only functional from an engineering standpoint, but that fully reflects the priorities and expectations of the population and the social and economic fabric of Sarrabus.

"The amendment I presented in the chamber today primarily addresses rights: the right to mobility, to health, the right to exist as a territory; it addresses territorial rebalancing," Porcu states. "The Flumendosa can no longer be a border, as it has been in recent months; it must once again become a point of passage and growth for the entire Sarrabus region. The current renovations, in addition to their severe delay, will not be able to meet the current needs of road and vehicle traffic even once completed. The iron bridge will still be a bridge designed with late 19th-century criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to plan a concrete investment to launch a serious, rigorous, and shared feasibility study."

"We want every option to be evaluated," Porcu continues, "with an integrated approach that takes into account traffic, safety, environmental impact, and economic development prospects. We're not talking about a simple piece of infrastructure; the bridge over the Flumendosa impacts the quality of life of thousands of citizens, their access to medical care, schools, and services; it impacts their community life. These reasons are recognized and understood by the entire chamber, which signed and approved the amendment with me, and for that I thank them, as well as those who are working hard, in this extremely challenging situation, to advance constructive initiatives: the technical and political committee at the Regional Department of Public Works, the spontaneous committee for the iron bridge, the productive activities, and all the citizens of Sarrabus."
