Dragged out to sea by strong currents and waves, so much so that he was unable to return to shore.

This is how the 79-year-old Austrian tourist apparently drowned yesterday afternoon while he was bathing with his 72-year-old wife in the waters off the Maragnani beach, on the Valledoria coast, despite the adverse weather and sea conditions.

Only the woman managed to reach the beach with difficulty. When the Porto Torres Coast Guard arrived on the scene, the bathers had already recovered and dragged the lifeless body of the elderly man to shore.

The medical personnel who intervened on board the Areus helicopter rescue and the 118 ambulance operators provided first aid to the woman who was in a state of shock and in obvious breathing difficulties, so much so that it was necessary to transport her to the civil hospital in Sassari.

For the man, however, there was nothing that could be done: he died of drowning. The judicial authority ordered the return of the 79-year-old's body to his family.
