“Scenes of ordinary madness in the Uta prison”. This was reported by Michele Cireddu, secretary of Uil Penitentiary Police, in a note, which reads: “Almost at the same time, a prisoner started a fire, before being miraculously saved by the agents, when he was now unconscious from smoking; another ingested razor blades and was rushed to hospital, while a third an entire detention room, creating havoc ”.

Cireddu's comment is very harsh: “It is now a macabre succession of critical events and everything falls on the shoulders of the policemen who work in the detention sections. In the Cagliari institute there were hours of tension and tragedies were avoided only thanks to the great professionalism of the policemen who intervened ”.

"These episodes - adds the secretary - once again certify the great operational capacity of the staff, but reveal the serious difficulties in which they are forced to work. Uta is now a mix of problematic and troubled inmates who are creating very serious difficulties for the whole of the Institute, not only to the staff but also to the other inmates who would like to serve their sentence quietly but are forced to serve an additional sentence ".

And again: "The current work organization should be reviewed immediately because in our opinion it is not geared to concentrating most of the resources and units in the detention sections, where every day the staff is exposed to concrete risks and is forced to accumulate a extreme amount of psycho-physical stress. Thus - concludes Cireddu - we cannot go on ... ".
