The new Chief of Police of Nuoro, Fortunato Marazzita, who succeeds Alfonso Polverino, officially took office today. On the occasion of his inauguration, the manager held a press conference in which he outlined the guidelines of his mandate and shared a strong message of closeness to the territory.
“I have been in Sardinia for about 25 years,” Marazzita began, “mostly in the province of Sassari, where I have held all the positions: from the Mobile, to the Cabinet, up to the Administrative. I spent three years as vicar in Oristano and another three in Sassari. This land has entered my heart.”
Originally from Calabria, Marazzita has a long professional career behind him that has seen him work between Liguria and Tuscany (including Genoa and Prato), before returning permanently to Sardinia. “Now I arrive in Nuoro as a senior manager. It is a great honor for me to be the Police Commissioner of this province. I thank the Minister and the Chief of Police for the trust that has been placed in me”.
The new Police Commissioner expressed words of appreciation for the work done by his predecessor: "Dr. Polverino has done an excellent job, both on an organizational and operational level. We will continue on the path traced, working with commitment and consistency".
Proximity to the territory and attention to the social context
“I identify a lot with this land,” he continued, “and I see many affinities between Sardinia and my Calabria: both have difficult territories, problems in connections and communities proud of their identity. Security is a common good, a right for everyone. As Police we are called to give answers first, but often we cannot do it alone. Synergy with all institutions is essential.”
In his speech, Marazzita reiterated the centrality of prevention as a fundamental lever to guarantee the safety of citizens.
Focus on crime, prevention and territorial context
"Nuoro - he underlined - does not have a high crime rate, but there are significant data in some specific crimes such as homicides, personal injuries, drugs and intimidating acts. An in-depth analysis of the socio-economic context is needed to understand and act effectively. We must know how to read the territory".
Marazzita then highlighted the need for great attention to crimes that affect the weakest groups: "I am very sensitive to threats, beatings, stalking. Preventive measures, such as warnings, are fundamental tools to protect victims. Effective justice is also an excellent deterrent."
Legality and control of the territory
The new Police Commissioner finally reiterated the importance of administrative checks such as those on weapons, gold buying, public establishments, with the support of the Local Health Authority and the Fire Department. “They are important tools to keep the threshold of attention high and carry out prevention”.
His first day in Nuoro began with the laying of a laurel wreath in honor of the fallen members of the State Police, a symbolic gesture that marked the beginning of his new assignment in Nuoro in the name of respect, memory and commitment.
