Tragedy narrowly avoided today in Uta prison, where a 27-year-old inmate from Cagliari attempted to take his own life by hanging himself.
This was announced by the president of Socialismo Diritti Riforme Odv, Maria Grazia Caligaris.
He was saved by the 118 doctor who immediately intervened following a report from the prison police officer on duty, alerted by his cellmates.
The young man, alone while trying to commit suicide, is now hospitalized.
"The gesture, beyond the motivations that led this boy to do it, forcefully draws public attention - observes Caligaris - to the living conditions inside the Ettore Scalas prison which records the presence of 765 inmates (28 women) compared to 550 available places and a severe shortage of prison officers. This makes the presence of 118 doctors even more important, whose permanence in Uta, however, is constantly put in doubt by projects to reduce the number of health personnel".
