Defense Undersecretary Isabella Rauti is also in Decimomannu to take part in the final phase of the "Joint Stars" exercise.

This is the most important national defense exercise, directed and planned by the Operational Command of the Joint Forces Summit (COVI), which involves more than 5,000 men and women and about 900 air, land and naval vehicles . Among the participants were also students from four Italian universities employed as legal, political, media and gender advisors. The Decimomannu airport, the Teulada and Quirra shooting ranges and the opposite maritime areas were the venues for the exercises.

«Multinational, multi-domain, inter-force and inter-agency: this is the "Joint Stars" which sees the most valuable assets of the Italian Armed Forces engaged in joint training with the other bodies of the State and with the Countries of the Atlantic Alliance », the undersecretary said.

«Joint – added Isabella Rauti – means strengthening interoperability and creating a system, also to face the emergency, not only in the military sphere. This edition, first after the pandemic, has an even wider and more inclusive meaning because the local population has been involved in cultural, sporting and charitable initiatives ».

Again: "Particular attention was paid to environmental protection , through the involvement of experts and the preparation of specific plans to safeguard the territory and the natural heritage of one of the most beautiful islands in Italy ", underlined the undersecretary, recalling that " Joint Stars” is not only a training opportunity, but also “an opportunity to bring the population closer to the Armed Forces”.

Also present with Rauti were Undersecretary Matteo Perego di Cremnago , the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone , the Army Chief of Staff, Army Corps General Pietro Serino, the General Commander of the Finance Police Andrea De Gennaro , the operational commander of the joint forces, general of the army corps Francesco Paolo Figliuolo , the national inspector of the voluntary military corps of the Italian Red Cross, general Gabriele Lupini .

Joint Stars, like the NATO exercise, " concerns an inter-force and multinational military response in compliance with article 5 of NATO, which establishes the principle of defense in the event of aggression against an allied country ".

But other emergencies were also simulated: for example, the sighting of boats in distress and the rescue of shipwrecked people, Red Cross medical posts to help injured people, the management of displaced persons and the evacuation of refugees, cyber operations, checkpoints for deal with illicit trafficking by land and sea. And again, training "in the defense of air, land and sea spaces, in cybernetic and space security, in the defense against chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear contamination and in contrasting the threats deriving from emerging technologies, increasingly used in the manufacturing of underwater or aerial drones".
