The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has authorized the definitive project of the second section of the Tyrrhenian Link , a direct current submarine cable project between Sardinia, Sicily and Campania of approximately 970 km in length and 1,000 MW of power.

The green light arrives for the western section, the one that connects Sicily and Sardinia .

This was made known by Terna, which will invest around 3.7 billion euros in the entire project over the next few years, involving 250 companies in its implementation. The work will be carried out in successive phases and completed in 2028.

THE PROJECT – The new interconnection involves the construction of two direct current underwater power lines (one from Campania to Sicily and one from Sicily to Sardinia). 480 km long in total, the recently authorized western route connects the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese, in the province of Palermo, to Quartu Sant'Elena . From here, the underground cables will mainly run along existing roads for approximately 30 km in total, leaving the environment and landscape unchanged, until arriving respectively in the locality of Caracoli , also in the Municipality of Termini Imerese, and in Selargius , where the conversion stations will be built in areas adjacent to existing power stations . For the laying of marine cables at the landing places, the use of the remote-guided drilling technique (TOC controlled horizontal drilling) will be used which will reduce interference with the marine flora and the impact of the works on the coast.
