Transplants done in Sardinia in 2023 are increasing - 79 in total, compared to 76 the previous year - but given the sharp increase in reports of brain death (115) and the number of donors used (61), patient associations warn: "Much more could have been done."

The alarm comes once again from Prometeo Aitf Odv: «Given the great procurement work of the regional transplant center, the local coordinators of donations in intensive care and the volunteers, with so many donors used, one would have expected a natural strong increase in interventions. Instead the situation is dramatic : with hundreds of people who are unable to do all the pre-transplant visits and therefore cannot be put on the list and have the transplant. We need to lengthen the lists of patients waiting for transplants and strengthen dedicated healthcare staff."

Lorenzo D'Antonio, coordinator of the Regional Transplant Center, explains: «It is obvious that we must always improve, we are fully committed to implementing the waiting lists, and we are succeeding, with several additions also in December and January: having more patients , each with its own clinical history, will allow us to allocate organs in a coherent manner. Numbers are important, but we focus on quality." And regarding the workforce: «We have an excellence, which however must be supported, supported and cared for».
