A long silent procession, made up of hundreds of people, to say goodbye to Gino Mazzette, the 74-year-old pensioner who died charred to death in the garden of his home last Saturday in Macomer.

The procession, to express closeness to the family, wound its way through the streets of the populous Sertinu district, after leaving the 74-year-old's home in via Giotto. People who came from different parts of the island, but above all from Ollolai, the victim's country of origin.

For the funeral, the parish church of the Madonna Missionaria was filled to capacity, so much so that it could not accommodate the people who crowded into the churchyard.

The homily of the parish priest, Father Andrea Rossi, who recalled the figure of Gino Mazzette was touching. Referring to the Gospel, the priest said among other things: «Death is part of this life. The time is up. Get converted and believe in the essentials of the Gospel. Time has come for Gino who, despite his tragic death, has drawn close to the Kingdom of God and makes us look beyond. When asked why did this happen? - added Father Rossi - there is no answer. It's nobody's fault. Let us entrust ourselves to God and try to be disciples, despite the harshness of reality".

After the funeral, the pensioner's body will be cremated and buried privately on Tuesday. The entire Macomer community is still shaken by what happened.
