Visit to Sardinia by the secretary of Sappe (Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police), Donato Capece, to take stock of the detention facilities. There are too many inmates in Sardinian prisons, where the staff of the Penitentiary Police is reduced to the bone, with workloads at the limit and assignments of tasks to be reviewed. A disconcerting picture is the one painted by the general secretary of Sappe, who starting from the Bancali prison, will also stop in Oristano, Is Arenas and Uta.

In Italy there are 23,300 prisoners with definitive sentences ranging from zero to three years, who could be assigned alternative detention regimes by carrying out work useful to the community, provided for by our law but disregarded by the State. On the Island the prison population is 2,260 prisoners . In Bancali there are 520, compared to a regulatory capacity of 450, while the officers on duty are just over 300. At least 30 more would be needed.
