The chestnut woods of Gennargentu become places of encounter and participation, where isolation and a sedentary lifestyle can be countered, physical and mental well-being promoted, and bonds within mountain communities strengthened.
These are the objectives of the project "Affustigare per il sociale – I sentieri del castagno come strumenti inclusione e benessere," promoted by the Belvì Biodiversity Association and presented to the Fondazione di Sardegna.
At the heart of the initiative, scheduled from November 1st to 29th with four events dedicated to physical activity, folk traditions, and the promotion of local products, is a vision of the region that goes beyond its touristic dimension. The trails, chestnut groves, and public spaces become accessible places to meet, share experiences, and build relationships, with particular attention to the elderly, those experiencing vulnerability, and young people at risk of marginalization. Trekking, fitness walking, yoga, and gentle gymnastics are the activities through which the project aims to promote an active lifestyle, fostering opportunities for encounters and participation open to people of all ages and backgrounds.
"Chestnuts, Mandrolisai wines, folk games, and artisanal knowledge are tools for connecting and transmitting culture," explains Sebastiano Casula , president of the association, "and with Affustigare per il Sociale, we want to strengthen their value by promoting the participation of the most vulnerable, strengthening ties between local communities, and combating sedentary lifestyles and isolation. In our vision, a trail isn't just a path to travel; it can become a path toward health, inclusion, and new human relationships."
The program will kick off on November 1st with “Yoga among the Chestnut Groves,” a session open to all in the natural setting of the woods, followed by a tasting of chestnuts and Mandrolisai wines and live music.
The second event, scheduled for November 14th, will focus on gentle exercise and socializing, with exercises designed for those who don't regularly participate in sports and for the elderly. The event will conclude with a celebration of local flavors, including chestnuts, wine, and local produce, accompanied by music.
On November 22nd, the initiative will move to the town square for a day dedicated to traditional games, designed to foster dialogue between generations. Elders will be able to pass on the rules, gestures, and memories of ancient games to their younger counterparts, transforming shared memories into an opportunity for reunion. Once again, the day will be accompanied by local sweets, chestnuts, wine, and musical entertainment.
The final event, scheduled for November 29th, will focus on winemaking and distillation, with an urban tasting trail that will include several wineries. The itinerary can be explored on foot or by e-bike and will offer participants the opportunity to experience traditional processes firsthand, meet producers, and rediscover the wealth of knowledge linked to the local food and wine culture.
