The trial of Fabrizio Congiu , 53, accused of the murder of 74-year-old Venerato Sardu, killed in his home in Is Mirrionis , in Cagliari, on 16 February last year, began today in Cagliari, in the Court of Assizes. .

The defense requested a psychiatric evaluation and the Court postponed the hearing to May 8 when it will be decided whether to grant it or not.

The charges for Congiu, unemployed and disabled, are those of aggravated voluntary homicide and also of robbery. Sardu had been killed in the apartment on the ground floor of the building in via Ogliastra. The victim was the owner of the entire building, while Congiu lived in a rented apartment on the third floor. The landlord, however, had evicted him because he hadn't paid for months.

According to the prosecution, the 53-year-old killed Venerato Sardu in an attempted robbery. He had entered the ground floor apartment to steal the 74-year-old's money, then hit him with a hammer and a knife. But it had been filmed by the cameras present in the building in via Ogliastra and inside the house.
