Fear erupted along the third stage of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail, in the section connecting the hamlet of Masua to Cala Domestica, where a group of hikers ran into trouble. The alarm was raised shortly before 6:00 PM, when the 118 Emergency Operations Center received a report from several members of the group.

Twelve technicians from the Sardinian Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service, including a doctor, from the Iglesias, Cagliari, and Medio Campidano stations, responded to the scene. The teams were divided to cover the route: one departed from Masua and headed for Cala Domestica, while another reached Cala Domestica to verify whether the hikers in difficulty had managed to complete the route.

After checking, it was discovered that one member of the group was missing. A team then began ascending the trail toward Masua and, not far from Cala Domestica, located the man: a sixty-year-old from Abruzzo, fatigued and dehydrated but fortunately in good health. After an on-site assessment, he was accompanied along the return trail by CNSAS technicians.

The Areus air rescue service, based in Cagliari, also participated in the operation, arriving with the medical team and a helicopter rescue technician from the Alpine Rescue Service, who provided assistance to some members of the group. An ambulance from the Croce Azzurra di Buggerru also responded to the scene.
