The Dimonios are all at home, the message from a “Sassarino”: «We will never forget»

The Dimonios group, with the war flag of the Sassari logistics regiment led by commander Eugenio Fortunato, returned yesterday evening and left Lebanon. Six months on the front line on that very hot border with Israel, a mission marked by very strong tensions with frequent clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah militias. Several Unifil bases, especially between October and November, were hit by rockets and some Sardinian soldiers were injured.
The mission concluded in early February, yesterday evening the last group also returned: among them is also the chief sergeant major Mirko Garau . Terralbese, 46 years old and with six international missions behind him, today sends a message to his colleagues , to those guys with whom he shared difficult and delicate moments, but also the joy of returning home and embracing his loved ones.
«Brothers, this is for you.
Only we can truly understand what it means to live under the screaming sky, with shortness of breath and a heart that beats too fast every time the hiss approaches. “There it is, there it is...” How many times have we thought it, curled up, hoping it wasn’t our turn, praying it wasn’t a friend’s. No one can know what it feels like to look into each other’s eyes, stained with dust and fear, and then laugh together, because we are still here. This letter is for you, brothers in arms, with whom I have shared everything: stolen sleep, broken bread, long nights made of waiting and heavy silences. It is for those who don’t need words to understand, because a look is enough for us to know what the other feels. And this is also for those who are waiting for us at home. For our wives, husbands and children, who lived our war without fighting it, with the anxiety that devoured them every time we quickly ended a video call, hoping they hadn’t heard the explosion that had surprised us. For them, who smiled even when their hearts trembled, who waited for our every message with bated breath, who counted the days until our return. We know. They know. And for this, we will never forget.
This is what I chose to be.
I swore to the Italian Flag. I am a soldier, a soldier of the Italian Army. I am a Dimonios of the Sassari Brigade.
With all honor and respect, FORZA PARIS
Chief Sergeant Major, Mirko Garau»
