The demonstration against the regasification terminal blocks Cagliari: haywire traffic

" No to the regasification terminal in Giorgino, yes to renewable energies ". There is a unanimous request from citizens' organizations and associations who met this morning in Piazza del Carmine in Cagliari to then leave in procession to the fishing village to say "no" to the Sardinia Lng project which envisages the construction of a LNG terminal in the canal port with a liquefied natural gas storage and regasification facility.

A long queue of cars formed along the way. "We are not against the regasification terminal regardless, we only ask that it not be built behind our houses ," said Mariano Strazzeri, chairman of the Giorgino Villaggio Pescatori committee. «There are many other places to do it, one of these is the industrial area of Macchiareddu. An accident inside the regasification plant would cause a terrible chain explosion within a radius of about ten kilometres, the consequences would be disastrous . Then there are the risks to the environment , particularly to the fauna of the area. We hope that the Region will listen to us», concludes Strazzeri.

A sharp "no" to all regasification terminals, everywhere, was instead strongly reiterated by all the other associations present : Donne Ambiente Sardegna, Sardegna Pulita, ItalExit, the Italian Communist Party, Fridays for Future, Defenders of Nature, Association for the climate, out of the fossil.

"The regasification terminal construction project was approved by the Ministry of the Environment without consulting the local inhabitants and without listening to the scientific community, which claims that methane is responsible for about 30% of global warming," says Bianca Pili, an activist by Fridays for Future. «Traffic is haywire, but today's demonstration is important there is a part of the population that is marching for Giorgino, against the crazy idea of building a regasification terminal near the houses and against fossil fuels, which are still present in Sardinia today in large quantities», adds Angelo Cremone of Sardegna Pulita.
