Support for the director general and deep concern over a sudden change at the top of the regional Civil Protection: this is the position expressed by the Barracelli companies following the news of the resignation, submitted last Wednesday, of engineer Mauro Merella , appointed by Alessandra Todde's government to lead the regional Civil Protection in the summer of 2024.

The Barracelli Regional Operational Coordination Committee, the Barracelli Autonomous Union, and the Barracelli Union have intervened, calling for intervention by regional institutions and appealing to Merella himself, who previously served as director of the Emergency Planning and Management Service under the previous administration of Christian Solinas , to consider withdrawing his resignation.

"In recent years, under Merella's leadership," they explain, "we have witnessed a clear and positive shift in emergency management, actively collaborating on several successful projects. His leadership has ensured greater efficiency, strengthened the regional system's credibility at the national level, and consolidated a fruitful collaborative relationship with the barracelli companies."

"At a delicate time in history, with major legislative changes looming, affecting both the civil protection system and the imminent start of the firefighting campaign," they add, "the current director general represents a key link between the institutions and the operational forces on the ground."

There is grave concern: "We fear that a sudden change in leadership could jeopardize the results achieved so far and jeopardize future projects that see Sardinia as a model of efficiency in civil protection." The Barracellis are demanding that the manager "consider withdrawing his resignation."

The Civil Protection Territorial Coordination of Medio Campidano also supports this position, expressing regret at the director's decision and recalling the relationship built over the years with the regional organization. " Since his appointment, a fruitful and constructive relationship has been established between the General Directorate and the representatives of the Civil Protection volunteers: an exchange based on dialogue, listening, and collaboration," they write, also calling for a reconsideration.

Merella left his post after the approval of the Civil Protection reorganization law, which, as confirmed by the person concerned, did not provide for the hiring of managers on a contract basis. The amendment that would have included this option was rejected because, according to leaks, it is mandatory to respect the rankings, which would otherwise have been circumvented.
