The car of the mayor of Mogoro , Donato Cau, was set on fire.

It happened last night . The vehicle , an old Fiat Punto, was parked under the mayor's home .

Firefighters and Carabinieri from the local station were on site. The origins of the fire are still to be clarified but it could be arson .

« It is a regrettable fact, I am sorry for my family, for my wife and for the fear that triggered this episode. It's not a good experience ,” Cau said. "We heard a roar around 11.30pm, we looked out the window and saw smoke and fire coming out of our car," explained his wife.

The most probable hypothesis is that of arson even if the firefighters found no traces of primers or accelerating material on the spot. The carabinieri of the Mogoro Company have recovered the footage from the cameras in the area and are speaking to the residents.

Just a Radiomobile patrol passing by via d'Arborea at 11.30 pm immediately noticed the fire in the car. Officers searched the area but found no one. "It is an experience that I do not wish on anyone", reiterated the mayor.

SOLINAS – "A very serious act of intimidation and even more hateful and cowardly because it was committed against the first representative of the institutions in the area, who works on the front line for the good of his community", is the comment of the president of the Region, Christian Solinas. «In the face of these violent acts, which unfortunately are repeated with worrying frequency, there is a need for a firm condemnation by the institutions and by all Sardinians. Maximum support must be given to the mayor of Mogoro, to all the local administrators who have had to suffer threats and heavy intimidation in recent years and to the police forces involved in guaranteeing security in the area”, concludes the governor.

PAIS - Solidarity with Cau also comes from the Regional Council: "The long series of intimidating acts carried out against those who personally take care of the good of the communities is the worst expression of incivility - writes Michele Pais, president of the Assembly –. Anyone who uses violence to intimidate must be stopped and sentenced without extenuating circumstances. I am sure that mayor Cau will not be intimidated and will continue his action with the necessary determination for the good of his community". For Pais it is necessary to be united in order to oppose a phenomenon that is repeating itself too frequently: «We cannot get used to these criminal acts or resign ourselves to the idea that in Sardinia the message passes that public administrators can be targets of common criminals, that they must be punished and socially marginalized".
