Cursed bad luck. Every time they had to measure the polluting or radioactive substances of the "Penisola Delta", the extreme edge of southern Sardinia, enclave of Teulada, they were swept away by the wind. Not once, always. They write it shamelessly, as if to pre-establish that void in the analyzes of poisons and radiations that have devastated a protected oasis without return, complete with a decree, transformed into a perennial war field. Here, in the NATO inter-force range in Teulada, the only real free zone on the island, in force only for generals and ministers, where for decades missiles and bombs of all kinds have been consumed without respite, there is impunity, that for environmental disaster. On the one hand, the lawyers of the generals, under judgment at the Court of Cagliari, invoke acquittals and no place to proceed and on the other, the same graduates, put pen to paper the havoc that has devastated that naturalistic area transformed into a dumping ground for poisons and dangers.

Criminal traffic jam

At the Ministry of Defense they hoped not to cross the two procedures, the penal and the environmental one, but hopes don't always turn into miracles. The result is evident. On the one hand, the technicians of the Cagliari prosecutor's office sculpted heavy stones, complete with a documented and unappealable verdict: environmental disaster throughout the shooting range, without ifs, ands or buts. On the other hand, however, the stars tried to disavow the work of the Public Prosecutor's Office and of the Judge himself who asked for the indictment with arguments as strong as they nailed. Now, between the two procedural positions, the next hearing is set for June 16th, a document is insinuated which is destined to put the deniers of the environmental disaster against the wall. It was signed by none other than the Sardinian Army Military Command, the advanced arm of the Ministry of Defense in Sardinia. The deeds filed silently with the Environment Department have an object that is worth an indictment: «Compendium for the removal of exercise residues from the “Delta” Peninsula of Capo Teulada».

Surrender to disaster

Much more than a confession, acts and evidence that look more like a surrender than an attempt to remedy the disaster. There is everything in those documents that the Ministry of Defense has presented to declare that they, generals and ministers, want to clean up what they have declared unclearable. In the Prosecutor's Office and in the Court they tried to "dodge" the boulder of environmental devastation with statements as surreal as they are contradictory, but the documents are cartacanta. In the dossiers of the palaces of Rome, word of mouth has always been explicit: the judges must be declared that that area has always been codified as the "Prohibited Peninsula", where everything was lawful and unpunishable. In reality, however, in the document sent to the Department of the Environment to start a preliminary procedure for the authorization of environmental remediation, the confession is disarming, complete with bombs and missiles resurfaced in those areas forgotten by everyone.

Confession

The confession is shocking, complete with deeds and misdeeds, silences, works and omissions. The four-color document penned by the Ministry of Defense goes far beyond spontaneous declarations, starting with the "very unfortunate" technicians sent from Rome to measure pollution and poisons in the area of the massacre in Teulada. Every time they went to the scene there was a different excuse to remain with the palm of their nose, without being able to record and document a precise verification of the crime.

state method

The method of the "silencer" operation applied to the military pollution in Teulada seems to be once again the one adopted by Francesco Riccobono, a professor at the University of Siena, hired by the Ministry of Defense to declare that there was an earthly paradise in Quirra. The Tuscan professor, pressed by the magistrates of Lanusei, had the audacity to declare that the radioactivity of the thorium in the Perdasdefogu polygon had disappeared from the final report due to a pagination error. In reality, on that occasion, as emerged from the environmental interceptions, it was precisely the military leaders who asked him to omit, cancel, manipulate the investigations. In Teulada, however, the envoys of the Ministry of Defense have eliminated the root of the problem: the detection instruments due to the strong wind do not record well and the results are altered and invalid. If in Quirra the Torio disappeared due to a phantom pagination error, in Teulada the wind took care of it.

Wind & surroundings

The "Pasubio" operation, deployed between 2014 and 2021, took care of disturbing the anemometer in that real war pollution receptacle, even if declared, falsely simulated. The picture of the reliefs is a film, all shot in the Delta peninsula. The military leaders in the document that ended up in the hands of the Sardinian Region illustrate the disaster by chapters. It begins with the sub-area Alfa : «Devices of various types and sizes have been found, both loaded with high explosives and for training. The area was used for the arrival of small to medium caliber mortar bombs, 40mm rifle grenades, infantry rockets, missiles, submunitions and/or parts thereof. Bravo sub-area: «This is an area mainly affected by explosions of aircraft bombs (with consequent large craters and a marked possibility of concealment of previously launched and potentially unexploded ordnance). Further devices present in the area are of naval type of various calibres, in addition to experimental ammunition (in this case some electronic components considerably increase the risks due to electrostatic/magnetic fields). The strong lateral wind affects the stability of the operators and conditions the correct functioning of the search instruments».

Detector wind

That's not all, there is the Charlie sub-area: «Very high concentration of munitions of various types and it is probably the most used area over the years. The operating personnel were able to ascertain how sometimes the gusts of wind make previously invisible bombs and materials resurface on the surface". There is the Echo sub-zone: «Various types of devices have been found. The operators encountered great difficulties in uncovering large buried ordnance due to the stony ground. And again that "cursed disturbing wind" in the Foxtrot sub-area: "Territory characterized by a strong side wind which affects both the stability of the operators and the correct functioning of the instruments". In short, the constant is consolidated: the soldiers who go to look for the pollution skid due to the wind and the detection instruments do not work.

Cyclopean bombs

Confession becomes a "condemnation" when they can't help but draw up an initial list of bombs that re-emerge from crossing the half-metre long road built in the initial part of the Forbidden Peninsula. In 2017, a 500-pound Mk 82 aircraft bomb emerged from the "Delta" area, 226 kg of explosives, 32 times the quantity of 7 kg used in the Piazza Fontana massacre, in 2018, 4 bombs of 500 pounds each were "unearthed" for a total of 904 kg of explosives, on 9 October 2018 two 1000-pound plane bombs exploded, or another 904 kg of cyclopean "devastation". The list does not stop, in 2019 other 250-pound Mk81s were found and two others, one 500 and one thousand, ditto in 2020 and 2021. They try to do the math, with a summary table that counts the number of ammunition "forgetting" the weight of the bombs. They go so far as to argue, without any shame, that the aircraft bombs found amount to just 1.05% of the munitions resurfaced from that state landfill. It is a pity that they "forgot" to count the weight of the plane bombs found in that small stretch of the forbidden peninsula: 3,742 kg of explosives still poured with impunity on the ground.

Radioactive thorium

Finally, there is the Milan chapter, the anti-tank missile equipped with thorium-based aiming, a radioactive substance much more dangerous than uranium itself. According to the Cagliari prosecutor's office, 11,785 would have been exploded. Strangely, there are only a few finds in the records: two were identified on March 28, 2018. All the others disappeared, no one knows where they ended up, together with all the radioactive load. In those areas where those engines of the "nuclear" targeting missile have been identified, radioactive activity was detected twenty times higher than that found in the ground. All this in a site called "Isola Rossa and Capo Teulada", an environmental and naturalistic area of Community Interest.
