"We want our traditional Carnival back." The community of Sorso is demanding it. The request is set out in black and white in an open letter signed by several residents and addressed to Mayor Fabrizio Demelas and his council. "We wish to express our deep regret and firm opposition to the political decisions regarding the management of our cultural and traditional heritage," the letter reads. "A town isn't just made of walls and asphalt; it thrives on the roots that hold it together. The decision to deprive our community of one of the few moments of conviviality and encounter remaining at this time of year is therefore incomprehensible ."

For residents, the decision to move the festival to the summer "has already demonstrated a disconnect from the historical reality and profound meaning of a ritual that belongs to the winter months. However, the current decision to forgo it altogether, even going so far as to divert resources, such as the floats, and the attention of our fellow citizens to the neighboring municipality, appears to be a true act of 'cultural surrender.' "

Residents are calling not only for the reinstatement of Carnival during its normal season, but also for a plan to enhance historic sites and local customs, as well as "investments that allow the community to gather here, at home, without being forced to emigrate to experience a moment of joy."
