On May 20, 1943 , exactly at 2.10 pm, with an air raid by English fighter-bombers, five bombs were dropped on Macomer, causing devastation and death. That tragic afternoon 80 years ago, Salvatore Nieddu , then 22 years old, was reported missing after a bomb, dropped by an English plane, hit a train full of weapons, which was parked near the Macomer station, where Salvatore Nieddu was on duty. There were many dead and many missing. Salvatore Nieddu was not even found among the victims. So much so that, in the days following her, his country of origin, his family mourned him and celebrated a sort of funeral , because nothing more was heard of that boy after that tragic afternoon.

After a month, however, Salvatore Nieddu appeared in his town. He hugged his incredulous and surprised family and friends . He had not been a victim of the bombing but, in shock, after seeing some of his friends die, he had wandered aimlessly in the Marghine countryside for an entire month, feeding himself as best he could . Then the return.

Yesterday, thiu Barore Nieddu, turned 102 years old . He was able to celebrate at his home, where he lives with his children (three sons, breeders like him) and two daughters, after being widowed several years ago. The ultracentenary received best wishes from the entire town and from the mayor Luigi Cadau.
