An enormous crowd, which the church of San Giuseppe was unable to contain, took part today in Sassari at the funeral of Stefano Cherchi, the jockey who died last 3 April in Canberra , Australia, following an accident in which he was the victim March 20 during a race at Thoroughbred Park.

The 23-year-old's body arrived in Sardinia this morning, with a touching greeting from his brother Matteo , who also spoke on behalf of his sisters Maddalena and Eleonora and his parents Maria Antonietta and Bastiano: «Stefano, that moment will come when your plan will come true and we will all be together again. I think you will tell us that we were good at filling the void you left and that, as usual, you arrived before us ." Brittany, the jockey's girlfriend, also participated in the ceremony, many followed her live streaming from England and Australia.

THE DRAMA

Almost at the end of the race a month ago Cherchi was leading Hasime when he fell, hitting his head and suffering serious injuries, which led to his death within two weeks.

Originally from Mores, the 23-year-old was considered one of the most promising talents in international horse racing . Already at 16, when he moved to Newmarket, England, he was considered a child prodigy. There he won 106 victories and achieved great popularity, thanks also to his character for which everyone loved him, as demonstrated by the wave of affection and solidarity with his family.

He had recently moved to Australia: he had already achieved important placings and two successes, the third was close, then the tragedy.
