It was supposed to be built in the Salomoni area with the aim of giving a home to dogs without an owner: but the project conceived by the previous administration never saw the light of day.

Pula will not have a municipal kennel, the animals collected in the territory will continue to be hosted in affiliated facilities: a glimmer of hope, however, is represented by the project to build a shelter in the territory of Sarroch, which the Council led by the mayor, Angelo Dessì, will complete before the end of the year.

"We are certain that we will complete the work within the year, the space identified is located in the Is Piccionis area", explains Dessì, "an area already equipped with water and electricity that will allow us to welcome abandoned animals. The year we took office, we realized that every year the municipal coffers spent 40 thousand euros for the maintenance of dogs abandoned in private facilities: with this shelter, also open to the needs of neighboring towns such as Pula and Villa San Pietro, we aim to crack down on the problem of stray animals. It will be essential, however, to find a volunteer association ready to take care of the management of the facility".

Walter Cabasino, mayor of Pula, underlines the efforts made every year by the Municipality to fight stray animals: «We carry out sterilization campaigns for dogs and cats and pay the animals' board until their adoption, the project conceived of a kennel in Pula had been rejected by the ASL, but planning a structure only for one town makes no sense, the opening of the shelter in Sarroch could represent the solution to our problems».

Ilaria Collu, leader of Siamo Pula, and deputy mayor during the previous council, recalls the difficulties encountered by the project to provide the town with its own dog kennel: «Several problems emerged, especially related to the location of the structure in the Salomoni area, today volunteers take care of the animals collected from the street, the opening of a shelter capable of responding to the needs of our territory would be a great step forward».

Alberta Pitzalis, president of the association "L'oasi del cuori vagabondi", experiences the problem of stray animals first-hand on a daily basis: "In less than a year we have collected and given hospitality to ten dogs, but the number of cats is now out of control. Despite the sterilizations carried out by the Municipality, also thanks to the births being one month earlier than usual, there are more and more cats, and in addition to those present in the five registered feline colonies, we continue to find new strays".
