Tradition will be respected again: after two years of closure, the ancient Casa Mascia will once again offer hospitality to the carriage of Sant'Efisio and to the guardianship on the night of May 1st. Efisio Mascia, the first owner of the two-century-old residence on Via Siotto, had written it down in black and white in his will dated December 20, 1886: the heirs of this house would have to offer shelter to the militiamen and to the carriage of the warrior martyr every year. Over the centuries, Casa Mascia has changed owners, and was then purchased twenty years ago by the Municipality, but the wishes of those who had it built have always been respected: in a few weeks, after careful restoration, the fourteen rooms and the internal courtyard will be able to be used again.
The mayor, Angelo Dessì, says he is pleased to be able to return an important piece of Sarroch's history to the community: "The project, started by the previous administration and completed by us, has allowed us to bring this house, a crossroads for the passage of Sant'Efisio in Sarroch, back to its ancient splendor. In addition to hosting the coach and the guard on the night of May 1st, as the legacy requires, we would like this home to become a place of culture, which fits well into our project to redevelop the historic center, perfectly integrated with the multipurpose center for the elderly that will be built next door." Umberto Russo, Councilor for Public Works, illustrates the interventions carried out from February 2024 until the last few days: "The restoration work cost about 350 thousand euros, to the 230 thousand that the previous administration had obtained from the Metropolitan City for the Path of Sant'Efisio, we added 120 thousand euros of municipal resources to fix the roof, which had collapsed in some places. It was a very careful intervention of protection and conservation, in addition to reinforcing the walls, the work allowed us to restore the roof and reposition the ancient tiles". From the minority benches, Mirko Spiga, group leader of "Noi per Sarroch" says he is happy that an identity asset such as Casa Mascia is back at the disposal of citizens: "We are satisfied that the project has been completed, this ancient residence has great historical importance, its past, moreover, is closely linked to the cult of Sant'Efisio". Massimiliano Salis, group leader of “Sarroch al centro Progressisti”, underlines the historical importance of the ancient house in via Siotto: “After the restoration, we will be able to respect the wishes of the first owner again, Casa Mascia is an asset that identifies our community”.
