The constant requests from San Vito Mayor Marco Antonio Siddi and Villaputzu Mayor Pierpaolo Piu have been met: on Wednesday, August 5th, ENAS (the water system operator) will release water from the Nuraghe Arrubiu dam . This release into the Flumendosa Riverbed will be a modest amount (about five cubic meters per second), but will still allow farmers and ranchers to breathe a sigh of relief.
The mayors of Sarrabus have repeatedly requested ENAS's intervention for immediate support to the local agricultural sector, " as the sector in their respective territories and surrounding areas," the mayors emphasized, "is experiencing severe water stress." Therefore, "the initiation of a gradual and scheduled release of the floodwaters from the Flumendosa dam would replenish groundwater levels and ensure the necessary supplies for existing crops, preventing irreversible economic damage to local businesses, which are the driving force of the economy."
Furthermore, since reaching Villaputzu (with the bridge permanently closed) will require a long crossing over the dirt ford, "failure to empty the reservoir in a timely and controlled manner," the mayor of Villaputzu specified, "would expose the area to the risk of massive and sudden releases" during the rainy season, "resulting in the complete isolation of entire areas." The release will take place on August 5th, starting at 9:00 a.m., "for the time necessary to meet the demand."
