The number of residents in Sardinia is collapsing, which from 2016 to today has lost the beauty of 83,110 inhabitants , about 4.4% of its population. A decrease that has accelerated since 2019.

The birth rate is the lowest in Italy and almost all municipalities have a negative natural and migratory balance . Last year there was a slight halt in the downward trend, and instead the data for 2023 says that we are facing a new acceleration with another 12 thousand fewer people .

Immigration numbers are also decreasing, with the island not attracting new migrants and not even managing to keep existing ones . The data comes from the Mete 2023 report, edited by Crei Acli and presented this afternoon in Cagliari.

The data of the general balance is considered worrying: only 6 municipalities have a positive balance but they are very small towns with one or two more births than deaths . All others lose population, regardless of economic conditions. The percentage of people of working age is very low, while the number of over 65s is further increasing.

Chapter immigrants : those who arrive have an elementary or lower secondary school certificate, few have a professional diploma and many lack any educational qualifications.

The curiosity that emerges from the report is the increase in young Argentines who move to the island with the hope of finding a job and obtaining Italian nationality .

"Hardening depopulation - is the comment of the regional councilor of the Democratic Party Valter Piscedda - is a very difficult task but we must at least try to reduce it. One of the elements that could contribute to its slowdown is to ensure the presence of decent health and social welfare services and ensure that the economic and social costs are not borne by citizens. The sanitary abandonment of large areas of Sardinia is not only implementing the escape from these centers but is also causing a general deterioration in the quality of life".
