Time is running out, the hypothesized move is approaching and the controversy over the management of the San Benedetto market, its imminent renovation and its temporary "replacement" in Piazza Nazzari is heating up - quite a bit.

A heavy thrust comes from Giuseppe Farris, a lawyer who has announced his candidacy for the position of mayor of Cagliari.

«There are just 2 months left until the transfer without the Municipality, incredibly, having adopted the relevant definitive project. We are faced with yet another approximate and opaque action to which the municipal administration has become accustomed to us since 2019", accuses Farris.

Having kept the city council, but above all the entire citizenry, aside, says the former councilor of the Floris council, "an activity has been undertaken which, like the upheavals in via Roma and viale Trieste, is causing Cagliari to lose its identity" .

The attack on the current mayor is direct: «Paolo Truzzu, a single man in command, obsessed and eager to grab public funds to spend them quickly at any cost, even at the cost of damaging the city he should love and protect», accuses Farris, « decided to expropriate the open-air theater in Piazza Amedeo Nazzari, inaugurated just in 2019, and financed by the Region with CAP funds to create a questionable work on multiple levels».

Farris, who had resigned from the Lirico Board of Directors in controversy with Truzzu, recalls that this is "the same mayor who, during the press conference to present the "Classicalparco" exhibition, on 17 July 2020, said: "After ten years we reopen this space and give it to the people of Cagliari, hoping that over the next few years it can be appreciated and used not only by the Teatro Lirico but also for other entertainment activities which will benefit from 2,000 seats". We remember", he adds, "that the creation of the square was made possible with a program agreement between the Municipality, Region, Lyric Theater Foundation, Metropolitan City and Conservatory".

From here come three questions for the mayor. Farris asks Truzzu «if he is not afraid that the demolition and change of use of Piazza Amedeo Nazzari will cause financial damage. Whether the administrations that participated in the program agreement were made aware of the aforementioned change of intended use and whether they expressed their consent. And whether an alternative destination has been hypothesized for the street vendors who currently operate around the San Benedetto market".

Opposition city councilor Marzia Cilloccu also spoke on San Benedetto, having repeatedly asked for the competent commissions to be convened to try to understand where this was going. «To date», accuses the exponent of “Orizzonte Comune”, «unfortunately no commission has ever been convened either by President Mannino or by President Ticca, with the now evident intention of cutting off the minority from the possibility of being able to compare, get clarifications and make proposals that should have been more than legitimate in a democracy that wants to be such."

The controversy in the Council

Very serious, according to Cilloccu, «not having yet involved the council commission which should deal with the Markets in the transformation of one of the largest covered markets in Europe despite all this time having passed since the first request from the opposition», points out the councilor, who together with the entire minority, in recent days it has reiterated the request for a convocation, at this point "very urgent and unpostponable, requesting the hearing of the councillors, the managers involved and in the presence of the representatives of the different product categories of the market dealers' committee".

The response from the president of the Public Works Commission, Umberto Ticca, arrived shortly. Document in hand, it shows that a meeting of the parliamentarian was held in July: «I understand the short memory of those who ruined the Santa Chiara market and did not carry out any maintenance in those of San Benedetto, Via Quirra and Sant'Elia», he replies to Cilloccu, «but fortunately institutional activity is also made up of official documents».
