The Civil Protection Department has issued a heatwave alert from this afternoon until Sunday evening, warning that a heat wave is set to hit Sardinia.
Temperatures are expected to gradually rise in the next few hours , with peaks expected over the weekend: in some areas of the island the thermometer could reach 40°C.
The alert is in effect from 12 noon today, Tuesday, June 17, until 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.
The phenomenon is caused by a vast high pressure system expanding from Africa toward central-western Europe. In the coming days, the anticyclone will strengthen further, favoring an influx of warm air from the Sahara that will also affect Sardinia.
The Civil Protection Department also issued recommendations for dealing with high temperatures: avoid going outside during the hottest hours, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, especially for those at risk; protect indoor areas from the sun with curtains or blinds; eat light meals, lots of fruit, and drink plenty of fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine; wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and hats made of natural fibers. Furthermore, pay attention to sick people, making sure they aren't overly covered.
