Revolution for Sardinian farmers, the identification method of Sardinian PGI lambs changes .

A system which, above all at the beginning, may appear more complicated, but which guarantees greater traceability security and a more efficient fight against counterfeiting .

The new tool will allow the identification, with exact traceability, of the farm of origin and the path from the producer to the consumer. Farmers will now need to identify their lambs individually rather than by lot if they want to take advantage of the mated premium .

In fact, with the ministerial decree of 23 December 2022, Italy transposed the EU regulation (therefore valid for production throughout Europe), which prescribes the individual identification of sheep that receive coupled support.

"Without this new identification system - explains Alessandro Mazzette, director of the Consortium for the Protection of Sardinian Lamb - it will always be possible to continue to sell one's lambs under the PGI brand, but it will not be possible to access coupled support ".

«As happened when the sheep transport document went from paper to digital, it is normal that any change in the company's bureaucratic management can cause concern - explains Battista Cualbu, president of Contas -. This is a system that may seem complicated at first, but it's just a matter of getting into it. Once again the change will require the effort of the farmers but it is a novelty which in the long run can only bring benefits, because it gives further security in the identification of the meat and is therefore in favor of the farmers themselves, and of the same consumers who, thanks to this system, see strengthen the control measures of the supply chain".
