During a Gairo city council meeting, Roberto Marceddu was called offensive names ("Buffoon," "sesi unu mortu de famini," or "you're a starving man"). For those comments, a former councilor, Aldo Demurtas, 60, was sentenced today to nine months in prison (suspended) and ordered to pay a provisional fine of €5,000, plus damages and legal costs. The defendant was charged with insulting a public official.
Judge Nicola Caschili of the Lanusei Court granted the requests of the prosecutor, Giovanna Morra, and the civil plaintiff, represented by the lawyer Mauro Pilia. The events date back to January 14, 2020. Marceddu was an opposition councilor, his opponent being in the majority.
The discussion in the packed courtroom had descended into the issue of the Su Sirboni area. During the trial, audio recordings of the meeting were examined, and the mayor at the time, Franco Piras, was also heard as a witness.
