The inmate had asked to leave the cell outside the permitted hours. After the "no" received from the prison police officer, he waited for the expected opening to punch him violently on the temple.

The attack took place in the high-security section of the Tempio Pausania prison. The general secretary of the Uil Pa Penitentiary Police of Sardinia, Michele Cireddu, denounced the umpteenth attack against those who only do their job, adding: «In this case the officer was shot in cold blood and was not even able to account of what was about to happen. The prisoner, not satisfied», continues Cireddu, «then threatened him with death while he was barely able to get out of the section and call for help».

The policeman was urgently transported via 118 to the hospital: 30 days of prognosis.

« These are episodes that certify the defeat of the current penitentiary system», underlines the trade unionist, «this failure is inexorably falling back on the penitentiary police who are forced to make up for all the critical situations by enduring all kinds of aggression and harassment. Perhaps the government should understand that the electoral campaign has long since ended and the slogans in favor of the prison police should be translated into concrete facts before irreparable tragedies occur".

Alessandro Cara, regional secretary of the Union of Penitentiary Police Unions (USPP), also intervenes on the matter: "The situation of Sardinian institutes derives from years of political and institutional underestimation of the problems that have amplified over time", he accuses, "but also from of an administration that already from its regional summit does not appear more suitable to counter the many critical situations deriving also from the now unacceptable organic shortages and the absence of directors and commanders which contribute to the sense of abandonment of the prison police personnel ".

Cara, together with the national president of the union, Giuseppe Moretti, underlined that «the new departmental top will have to face once and for all the problem of the absence of such figures, but also review the positions of those managers who do not meet the standard of efficiency that it would be necessary to govern the penitentiary system in Sardinia and beyond».
