Cinema, shows, music, and traditions are revitalizing the waterfronts of Sardinia's port system. From Cagliari to Olbia, passing through Arbatax, the areas of interaction between port and city are increasingly central to the region's cultural and economic development.

This is evidenced by the success of "Cal'a Cinema 2026," the independent film festival hosted by the Sardinian Sea Port Authority at Cala Genovesi. For three evenings, one of the most characteristic spaces on the Arbatax harborfront was transformed into a hub of gathering and participation.

Last weekend's initiative represents one of the most obvious applications of the vision outlined by the Authority in its new Strategic Planning Document (DPSS), which identifies port-city interaction areas as a fundamental tool for strengthening the dialogue between the waterfront and the urban fabric through the promotion of culture, participation, and economic development.

This is a vision that the Sardinian Port Authority is already implementing with concrete support for numerous initiatives planned in the island's main ports. In Cagliari , the success of the Teatro del Mare, created in collaboration with the Teatro Lirico, has demonstrated how high-profile cultural events such as opera can also be held in port areas, transformed into prestigious open-air stages. It also demonstrates how the city's waterfront can be enhanced through international art exhibitions, such as the one currently being prepared with the Department of Culture for this fall.

In Olbia , the Arena del Molo Brin has become a reference point for shows, meetings and cultural events, including the pop opera Notre Dame de Paris scheduled for the next few days.

Similarly, in Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, and Portovesme , port spaces have been repeatedly granted for concerts and major events. The port of Oristano is also preparing to become a hub for agricultural and livestock-related events, thanks to the presence of a large multipurpose hall in the Multipurpose Service Center for Agri-food Logistics (Cespla). The Authority also aims to evaluate potential uses of the port spaces in Santa Teresa Gallura for cultural events.

The ability of the System's ports to host events of international importance has also been confirmed by highly attractive sporting events, such as the America's Cup preliminary regatta and the F1H2O (Formula 1 of water) in Cagliari, and the events related to the Rally Italia Sardegna in Olbia.

"Opening ports to culture and active community participation is one of the strategic directions of our vision and planning," explains Domenico Bagalà, president of the Port Authority of the Sardinian Sea . "The port-city interaction areas envisaged by the DPSS are not simply physical spaces, but places in which to build new relationships with the local area. All the events scheduled demonstrate how ports can become platforms for social and economic growth and how culture represents an extraordinary tool for incentivizing waterfront regeneration. Our goal is to continue making the System's ports increasingly accessible, vibrant, and integrated into cities, so that they can serve not only as strategic transportation infrastructures, but also as laboratories for social innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth."
