After a day dedicated to the replies of the public prosecutor and the civil parties, tomorrow afternoon, after the replies of the defense, the single judge Nicole Serra will retire to the council chamber and then issue the sentence.
The eight commanders who led the Perdasdefogu polygon from 2002 to 2010 are accused: they must answer for "aggravated omission of precautions against accidents and disasters" because they would not have banned the military areas to the public and would not have equipped the personnel with protective equipment.
The prosecutor Biagio Mazzeo asked for sentences of between 3 and 4 years for the defendants and replied to the defenders on the "non-responsibility of the commanders in matters of safety of the shooting range" and on the interpretation of the expertise of the super expert Mariano Mariani, according to which "not there has been an environmental disaster "." The commander is personally responsible for the security framework through the military involved in the 'eviction', at least - he said - he should have equipped the latter with the indispensable safety devices to avoid the inhalation of toxic substances. As for the expert's report, Mariani also stressed that military activities certainly involved the suspension in the air of fine particles and, I would add, with the presence of species containing uranium thorium and toxic contaminants of various kinds. This - concluded the prosecutor - has led to acute exposures, diseases, accidents and environmental contamination ".
Along the same lines, the civil lawyers Bachisio Mele, Roberto Peara, Giacomo Doglio and Giuseppe Caboni, while the lawyer Gianfranco Sollai asked for the documents to be sent back to the Public Prosecutor's Office to ascertain the responsibility of the Chiefs of Staff, the general managers of the successive armaments of the time and also of the ministers of defense of the time.
