The one in the photo is Viale Marconi. Now a very busy road that connects Cagliari and Quartu, then an artery surrounded by greenery, passable on foot, as demonstrated by the woman portrayed with the children. The image dates back to 1941, according to what is reported on the Facebook page where it was published: photographic Cagliari, between past and present. And it sparked the memories of numerous commentators.

«Certainly everything has changed, can some Quartese enlighten me?», asks whoever posted it, signing himself ML

The reactions come in avalanche, because initially there are also those who doubt that it could be the path indicated. "At the time, bicycles circulated almost exclusively," recalls Sandra Pani. Legitimate perplexities are raised on toponymy: «In 1941 was it already called viale Marconi or viale Quartu? Because Guglielmo Marconi is "recent"», says Marcello Cabras. In fact, the scientist died in 1937, four years before the shot. «My father», continues the social user, «is Quartese from 1926 and my grandmother from Quartese Doc from 1889. When they spoke of viale Marconi they always said viale Quartu. My father passed away in 2020 and he always called it viale Quartu, but I don't know if it's an actual name or a popular denomination».

The certainty that it is viale Marconi (or viale Quartu, at this point) comes from those who recognize the buildings in the background: «The buildings in the background are the former semolina or pasta factory of Rosas», Romeo Pani certifies, «they occupied the stretch of road that goes from the street of the same name (via Rosas) for about thirty meters towards viale Colombo». And here are those who, for sure, see the bell tower of the church of Quartu.
