An ancient amphora, most likely from the Roman era, emerges from the seabed of Porto Rafael , near Palau.

It was discovered by Nicola Garagnani , 49, a Bolognese engineer on vacation who came across the find during an underwater excursion. The amphora was located on a seabed at a depth of 5 meters and about fifteen meters from the shore.

The tourist immediately realized that it was not a simple shard, so he re-emerged and alerted the Port Authority of Palau. At 11.30 am the divers arrived on the spot: Giuseppe Pincioni, working for over 40 minutes on the seabed, re-emerged together with Garagnani bringing to the surface the amphora more than a meter high and still intact .

Now it is the Capitaneria to guard the find, which will then go to the Superintendency for archaeological heritage. In the coming days, experts will evaluate the age, historical interest and value of the amphora.

At first glance, it looks like a Roman amphora used to transport oil . In that area in the past there have been finds dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.

The diver, as required by law, is entitled to a reward that can reach 25% of the market value .
