An important innovation, intended to improve the quality of care for future mothers, has arrived in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department of San Martino di Oristano: nitrous oxide, a gas that relieves the pain of labor and which today and the Oristano hospital has two delivery rooms.
«The mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, contained in cylinders, is injected through a disposable mask and in a few seconds gives a feeling of well-being to the pregnant woman», explains the director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Operational Unit Francesca Campus, « The aim is to help pregnant women to face labor in a more serene and relaxed way, keeping their consciousness unaltered and without interfering in any way with the well-being of the fetus, thanks to the fact that the gas does not cross the placenta. Furthermore, the uterine contractions are not modified either in frequency or intensity, nor is the fetal heartbeat modified. Furthermore, there is no interaction with drugs commonly administered during labor, such as oxytocin."
Active for about twenty days at San Martino, currently there are already several women giving birth who have happily chosen this analgesic tool, appreciating its positive effects.
The one in Oristano is the second hospital in Sardinia, together with the one in Olbia, to introduce this system, a totally different option compared to anagelsia birth and which can be used in the event that the epidural is contraindicated, for example if the woman giving birth is affected from coagulation or skin diseases, in the presence of tattoos or if for various reasons you prefer a less invasive method.
